    Paper requirements

    Your paper must be carefully proofread and I will also ask you to focus on the style and organization of the paper (on-line sources will be very helpful in this respect). 

    The paper must be submitted to my e-mail  lyudmila.anikina@gmail.com  before the second Saturday of September 2011
    Be sure to save a copy on your USB-flash! 

    Late papers will not be accepted! 
    Please let me know if you have any questions or want to discuss your ideas. 

    Assignments

    Assignment #1. Oral presentations

    Each group of 3-4 will give a brief oral presentation (15 minutes), during which you will be responsible for leading the class discussion and presenting data that you've collected on your chosen points.

    You will be required to consult at least three outside sources (some Web sites mentioned above will be of great help). Download from the teacher’s notebook on your USB-Flash and study “Public Speaking” presentation.

    Some possible topics for presentation (you can also come up with your own suggestions):

    • your expectations at the beginning of the school year;
    • your worries at the beginning of the school year; 
    • your feelings during the first day at school; 
    • things you like about school; 
    • things you dislike about school and what can be done about them; 
    • what your school was like in the past.
    Assignment #2. Paper

    During these 6 lessons you will be required to write an essay about what school means to you .
    Your essay

    1. should contain a clear thesis and well-supported arguments
    2. should include the following points:

    •  how you feel about school in general
    • the part of school life you enjoy most
    • what makes you feel unhappy or anxious about
    • if your school provides you with a good start for adult life or not
    3. should demonstrate application of useful language (p.6,ex.6 WB)

    Sources are not required, but you may use them if you wish; be sure to cite all sources!

      Course Syllabus

      Week 1
      Lesson 1.Do exs.1-6 in class with your teacher and classmates. Read the tasks carefully. Pay attention to techniques for a group discussion of ideas in ex.3 (See “How to contribute to a group discussion of ideas” in “Learning strategies” p.169). Dialogue vocabulary on p.9 will help you.
      In ex.6 read the dictionary definitions of the words and phrases from the text and do the tasks. Use a monolingual dictionary or an electronic one Lingvo 12 on the teacher’s notebook.

      At home do exs. 1, 2 in your Workbook (WB) on p.4, exs.7-8 in the Student’s Book (SB) on p.11.

      Lesson 2.  Do ex.9-13 in class with your teacher and classmates. In ex.9 be ready to tell each other about the best/worst thing that happened to you on the first day at school this year.  Pay attention to how to use Present Perfect in ex.13 (See “Grammar reference” p.180). In exs.10-11 try to listen to 3 teenagers about their experiences on the first day at school, make notes in the table in WB p.5.

      At home do exs.4-6 in WB pp.5-6. In ex.4 use Present Perfect, in ex.6 complete the essay about what school means to you using 4 points and Useful language.

      Lesson 3. Do exs.14-18 in class with your teacher and classmates. Pay attention to pronunciation focus in ex.15. Choose the best options to define the words in bold in ex.16: boarder, homesick, bright, scholarship, compulsory, being left behind.  In ex.17 get meaningful combinations to make sentences about yourself, then go round the class to find the students who have ideas similar to yours. Report your findings to the class.

      At home study the internet resources given by your teacher. They will be useful for your project. Do exs. 8-10 in WB on pp.7-8. They all are about your elective courses choice.
      Lesson 4. Do exs.19-22 in class with your teacher and classmates. Here you will compare modern schools with those 100 years ago and ancient ones.

      At home talk to the oldest person to find out what school was like in the time of their youth. In  ex.23 use the points to guide you.

      Lesson 5. Do exs.24-31 in class with your teacher and classmates. You’ll become familiar with the psychologist’s advice how to avoid school stress, discuss  things you like about school, things you dislike about school and what can be done about them.

      At home write if you agree or disagree with the psychologist’s advice. Give your reasons and explanations.  Study “How to give a perfect presentation” in “Learning strategies” p.170, it will help you to get ready for your project work.

      Lesson 6. Ex.33- a project “Start anew”
       Work in groups of 3-4. Do the tasks:
      1.      Read through the ideas and decide on 2-3 points to speak about.
      2.      Discuss the points you have chosen and make notes.
      3.      Make a presentation with the ideas you have discussed. You can use pictures and photos to illustrate what you want to say.
      4.      Give your presentations on school-related topics. (See “How to give a perfect presentation” in “Learning strategies” p.170);

      Course Requirements

      Minimum requirements for passing this course are substantial course participation; on-time work and satisfactory attendance.
      To succeed in the course, you will need to read assignments, to follow the syllabus and be prepared to discuss when you come to class.

      We will use the Internet as a resource and you will be asked to read guidelines covering Internet use. Even if you are experienced with the computers and the software, you should be prepared to spend time outside of class (either at home or in Room 212) on various assignments and projects.

      In Unit 1 Section 1 you will be required:

      •   to write an essay about what school means to you;  
      •     to make an oral presentation;
      •   to take part in the project “Start anew”.

      Course Description

      Dear students of Class 10,
      This course will introduce you to 4 Units (Start anew, Talking on family matters, Civilisation and progress, The world of opportunities)  and will help you to improve your English through different tasks and projects. 

      The course is designed to serve as a "bridge" for students of Class 10, a transition from ESL courses at school to further regular academic study at the university and future career. It means that materials will be studied in order to improve students' academic study skills, learning strategies (p.p.167-174), develop IT competence and language abilities in all four skill areas - reading, writing, listening and speaking.

      To meet the goals of the course you must
      •     start with Unit1 Section 1 and do all the tasks in the textbook and Workbook;
      •    learn and practice techniques for a group discussion of ideas (See “How to contribute to a group discussion of ideas” in “ Learning strategies” p.169);
      •   revise Present Perfect (See “Grammar reference” p.180) ;
      •  report the results of a group discussion (reasons for going to school);
      •   guess the meaning of words from context;
      •   know words and expressions related to school, collocations related to school;
      •   give a presentation on school-related topics (See “How to give a perfect presentation” in “Learning strategies” p.170);
      •  listen to ex. marked with earphones.
