Course Description

Dear students of Class 10,
This course will introduce you to 4 Units (Start anew, Talking on family matters, Civilisation and progress, The world of opportunities)  and will help you to improve your English through different tasks and projects.
The course is designed to serve as a "bridge" for students of Class 10, a transition from ESL courses at school to further regular academic study at the university and future career. It means that materials will be studied in order to improve students' academic study skills, learning strategies (p.p.167-174), develop IT competence and language abilities in all four skill areas - reading, writing, listening and speaking.

To meet the goals of the course you must

·         start with Unit1 Section 1 and do all the tasks in the textbook and Workbook;
·         learn and practice techniques for a group discussion of ideas (See “How to contribute to a group discussion of ideas” in “ Learning strategies” p.169);

·          revise Present Perfect (See “Grammar reference” p.180) ;
·         report the results of a group discussion (reasons for going to school);

·          guess the meaning of words from context;
·         know words and expressions related to school, collocations related to school;

·         give a presentation on school-related topics (See “How to give a perfect presentation” in “Learning strategies” p.170);

·         listen to ex. marked with earphones.

We will be concerned not only with what modern school is, but how it was different 100 years ago, what your school was like in the past, what the features of stress are. As a result, you should prepare for class by thinking about worries and expectations at the beginning of the school year, your feelings during the first day at school, become familiar with the psychologist’s advice how to avoid school stress, things you like about school, things you dislike about school and what can be done about them.
Best regards,
your teacher L.A.
